The optic nerve travels from the brain, without intervening synapses, and envelopes the eye creating a direct connection to the nervous system. Therefore strain in the nervous system affects the eyes and vice versa. Muscular tension, especially around the head, neck and shoulders can create eye strain resulting in poor vision. On the flip side, eye strain can prevent the body from relaxing deeply.
